Susan Anon
Field Ecologist
Susan Anon is a field ecologist for Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s Science and Stewardship team. Susan assists with a variety of
projects focused on plant and animal-related restoration, land stewardship, and general and sensitive species inventory.
She comes to us from PCR Services Corporation where she managed projects and led field surveys as a Senior Biologist.
“I am excited to participate in land stewardship at such a large scale,” says Susan. “Working for IRC is a great
opportunity for me to understand a non-profit organization from many angles. I am also thrilled to be learning so
much from my fellow science and stewardship team members while making a real difference.”
Since joining IRC, Susan has been involved in various projects including the relocation and planting of the
many-stemmed Dudleya; placement and on-going work related to the artificial cactus structures; cactus scrub
restoration for the coastal cactus wren; vegetation mapping; Buck Gully RRMP; Laguna strip study; Crystal Cove
State Park restoration; and the Invasives and Restoration Initiative.
“Susan possesses a combination of skills that compliment the science team at all levels,” says Dr. Jutta Burger,
IRC Field Ecologist. “She has been a tremendous help in all aspects of our work, from pulling invasives with Land Stewards,
to participating in restoration preparations, to compiling and data basing our biological resources. She wears many hats and she
wears them all well.”
Susan’s educational background includes a bachelor’s in Geography and Environmental Studies from UCLA and a master’s in Environmental Science
and Management (MESM) from the Donald Bren School at UCSB. She also holds a permit to survey for the federally-threatened coastal California
gnatcatcher and is experienced in surveying for other sensitive bird species including the least Bell’s vireo, burrowing owl, and coastal cactus wren.
