Yi-Chin Fang
GIS Specialist
Yi-Chin Fang is a GIS (geographical information system) specialist for Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s Science and Stewardship team. Yi-Chin manages,
presents, and analyzes GIS data. She also creates highly detailed, complex maps for dissemination to partners and the public that effectively represents GIS
information, conveying the results of GIS analyses.
Yi-Chin also performs geo-processing tasks using tools in ArcToolbox and develops geo-processing models using Model Builder.
She is responsible for efficiently managing the GIS data and providing GIS training and assistance to other staff members.
“In the short time that Yi-Chin has been with us, her expertise in mapping and contributions towards key projects, such as developing a fire prediction model,
restoration prioritization and climate change strategy, have made her invaluable,” says Dr. Jutta Burger, IRC Senior Field Ecologist. “She is a great asset to our team and
to the organization as a whole.”
Prior to joining the Conservancy, Yi-Chin was a conservation intern at the Pacific Forest Trust in San Francisco. In addition, she was an applications specialist for
Clarient Inc. in San Juan and was an applications engineer at PerkinElmer Life Sciences in Torrance.
“I have always been interested in working at an organization that allows me to really get my hands dirty and contribute my skills,” says Yi-Chin. “Since joining
IRC, I’ve been involved in many projects including the grassland survey, riparian survey, Cactus replicas, fire modeling/bottleneck fuel reduction, vegetation
dynamics among others. It has truly been a learning experience and I feel that we are doing great work here-it feels good to make a difference.”
Yi-Chin has a master’s in environmental management from Duke University and is certified in geospatial analysis. She loves to hike, watch movies and read.
Her other passion is visiting national parks and has already been to 20 so far; her dream is to visit each and every national park in the world!
