Fire and Southern California
A Driving & Hiking Tour of The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks
Southern California has always been home to dramatic and often devastating wildfires. In the past several years, four large fires impacted The Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Too-frequent fire is perhaps the greatest long-term threat to the rare and globally-endangered ecosystems on the historic Irvine Ranch. Join us at 9 a.m. on January 17 at Augustine Staging area to explore the Natural Landmarks and learn how fire and natural habitats interact.
Through a combination of driving (you will be divided into groups and taking IRC vehicles) and hiking, travel throughout the northern reaches of The Irvine Ranch, within range of the Sierra Peak, Windy Ridge, Santiago and Freeway Complex fire locations.
Be prepared for a three to four mile hike and approximately 20 miles of driving on dirt road in four-wheel drive vehicles. Don’t forget your camera, plenty of water and appropriate hiking clothes and shoes. Participants will eat lunch in a very remote and scenic location in the back country of the land. Bring a yummy, non-perishable lunch in an easily transportable container.
This tour will be conducted in an isolated area and will have very few
stops at restroom facilities. Participants should come prepared to make
“bush stops” if needed and pack in any supplies necessary (tissue, zip
lock baggies, hand sanitizer).
This program is NOT recommended for anyone who gets motion sickness easily or has other health issues aggravated by off road driving. There will be a variety of amazing view points while on this tour so bring your camera and binoculars to enjoy the sights.
Make sure to check the website for updates as this program will be subject to cancellation due to weather.
